Our office offers the option of Intravenous Sedation, also referred to as “Twilight Sleep”, for any dental procedures.
Dr. Minalt was a resident in the Department of Anesthesia at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center from July 1, 1993 to June 30, 1995. The Department of Anesthesia is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (meeting DR 11.07 (1)(a)(2)). This training was an advanced education course as part of a medical training program providing advanced clinical training in anesthesiology. During that time, he received training in the anesthetic management of ASA I-V patients for surgery. He successfully provided anesthesia at all levels (minimal, moderate, deep or general anesthesia) for dentists, otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, podiatrists, gynecologic surgery, and neurosurgery. He received training in the anesthetic management of the pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric and developmentally challenged patient with intellectual disabilities.
For all levels of anesthesia, Dr. Minalt received training in taking a patient’s history, pre-operative evaluation and preparation, preparation of the anesthetic machine and personnel, monitoring and documentation, recovery and discharge, and intra-operative and post-operative emergency management.
After Dr. Minalt completed his two years of training, he demonstrated competency to provide all levels of anesthesia by multiple routes of administration, from history-taking to discharge. Dr. Minalt achieved this competency through hundreds of hours of didactic lectures and clinical experience with hundreds of patients in a hospital operating room and in a dental clinic.
IV Sedation aids in comfort and reduced anxiety when undergoing dental procedures. “IV sedation” (twilight sleep) is designed to help you to undergo dental treatment while you are in a anxiety free state. It enables you to accomplish dental treatment as well as not remember the procedure. It reduces anxiety and manages pain control. You may not always be sleeping but you will be serene, calm and relaxed during IV Sedation.
If you choose to have IV Sedation for a dental procedure in our office it will administered and monitored in a state of the art facility by Dr. John Minalt a Fellow of the American Dental Society of Anethesiology and a graduate of a hospital General Anesthesia residency.
IV sedation is a great benefit for many different case types and patients. As an adult oriented practice we treat many elderly patients that have multiple medical problems and are taking many different medications. The anxiety and stress of a dental appointment that can lead to elevations in blood pressure and stress on the heart can be alleviated with IV sedation. We use the minimal amount of drug necessary to accomplish the procedures.
IV sedation is also a benefit to patients that suffer from dental phobia or have fear of needles, drills or the sounds and sights of a dental office. Many of these patients have neglected their oral health care out of fear and have found successful treatment with IV sedation. Many of these patients conquer their fear and in the end attend dental visits without anesthesia.
IV sedation is a great adjunct for patients undergoing surgery for dental implants, gum surgery , wisdom tooth removal or many extractions at a single visit. IV sedation also is good for longer complex advanced restorative procedures.
Our office offers IV sedation in a patient focused setting. Our office is set in a 1920’s Victorian style office that many patients refer to as comfortable as home. Our case’s are never double booked and you monitored in a state of the art facility.
